Commercial and Office Building at 19 Avinguda del Portal de l’Àngel

Original structure

The conversion of this century-old commercial building into a modern space combining office and retail areas has required a detailed assessment of its existing structure to minimise the need for structural strengthening and thereby reduce the carbon footprint of the intervention.

Rehabilitation works

Localised strengthening of the main structural elements has been planned in areas affected by increased loads associated with the change of use or the more stringent requirements of current regulations. These reinforcements have been designed using steel structures compatible with the layout of the new service ductwork. The new vertical circulation areas, introduced to adapt the building to its new conditions of use, have been designed with lightweight steel structures to facilitate construction and reduce the loads transferred to the existing structure.

Foundations

The existing foundations are all shallow foundations, given the good bearing capacity of the ground. Some of them require localised enlargement due to the increase in loads.
